Monastery of Saint Panteleimon in Fodele
About 4 km south of Fodele, in the prefecture of Heraklion, on the slope of a hill with lush vegetation.
The monastery was founded at the beginning of the Turkish occupation by the monks Makarios, Kosmas and Jeremiah-Ieremias. In the entrance of the monastery there is an inscription with an engraved date of 1677.
The catholic of the monastery is a double-aisled basilica with the north aisle dedicated to Saint Anthony and the southern and older one to Saint Panteleimon. The present form of the catholic is the result of three interventions. First, the nave of Agios Panteleimon was built, presumably at the end of the Byzantine period. It has a magnificent carved wooden iconostasis of which only the upper part is preserved and the gold foil-plating it is lined with, can be seen.
Later, the second nave dedicated to Saint Anthony was built, while the third intervention of the katholikon was in 1861 by the legendary Abbot NeophytosPediotis, who extended the katholikon westwards, restored it and built the bell tower located above and in the middle of the western wall.
In the monastery, sacred relics are preserved, such as a part of the Holy Relic from the hand of Saint Panteleimon, which is kept in a silver case with reliefs. There are also four icons of the 17th century, works by Michael-MichailDamaskinos (the Second Coming, the Dance of All Saints, Saint Onoufrios, Saint Gerasimos) and Archon Michael, a work of the Cretan School of painting. Other noteworthy icons can be found in the church, such as the Great High Priest (1837), the Root of Iessai (1782), Agios Dimitrios (1762) and Agios Georgios, the work of TzortzisKastrofylakas.
